💧 Breville coffee machine stops after five seconds
If your Breville Barista Pro (BES878) or Barista Touch (BES880) runs water for about five seconds then stops, it is frustrating — and it is usually not an air lock.
🔍 The most likely fault is the flow meter. This small part contains a turbine and magnets. As water moves through it, the machine counts the rotations to confirm that water is flowing. If the meter or its connection fails, the machine can think there is no water flow and stop the cycle to protect the boiler.
⚠️ Buying a replacement flow meter? Avoid cheap generic or “compatible” copies. They can look identical to the original part but may differ internally, and many are not compatible with Breville machines. An incorrect flow meter can produce unreliable readings or leave you with exactly the same fault. For the best chance of a reliable repair, use a genuine Breville part or a replacement specifically listed for your exact Breville model—matching the appearance alone is not enough.
✅ First check the water tank is properly seated and try running water again. If the fault is still exactly the same after trying to prime the machine, the flow meter or its wiring is likely the issue.
