π¨ If your Breville coffee machine grinder has suddenly started making a loud clicking, popping or BRRRRRR noise, stop the grinder straight away.
This is a fairly common grinder problem on Breville coffee machines such as the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Oracle range. Continuing to run the grinder can turn a simple blockage into a grinder that needs replacing.
So, what is that horrible noise?
π§ That BRRRR Sound Is Usually the Grinder Clutch Slipping
Inside the Breville grinder is a clutch mechanism designed to protect the grinder when the burrs experience too much resistance.
When the grinder becomes overloaded, the clutch can begin to slip. At first, you might hear POP…..POP…..POP….. As the grinder speeds up, those individual pops can turn into the familiar BRRRRRRRRRRRR!
That noise is a warning. Stop the grinder immediately.
π Why Is My Breville Grinder Clutch Slipping?
In our experience repairing Breville coffee machines, there are two particularly common causes.
1. Very Hard or Light-Roasted Coffee Beans
Light-roasted coffee beans are generally harder and denser than darker roasted beans. Breville’s built-in grinders can sometimes struggle with particularly hard beans, especially when you are trying to grind them very finely for espresso.
The additional resistance puts more load on the grinder and can cause the clutch to slip. If this keeps happening with a very light roast, try a medium-dark or dark espresso roast. β Browse our coffee and accessories shop.
2. Something Is Stuck in the Grinder
The other possibility is a foreign object or obstruction inside the burrs. We have found all sorts of things inside coffee grinders over the years. Small stones and other foreign material can occasionally make their way into bags of beans; compacted coffee or debris can also prevent the burr from turning freely.
Once something jams the burr, the grinder motor is still trying to turn it. That is when the clutch starts slipping.
β οΈ Why You Shouldn’t Keep Running the Grinder
Don’t keep pressing the grind button hoping it will clear itself. The clutch uses plastic components that engage with each other. When the grinder experiences excessive resistance, these components can slip or βpopβ over one another rather than transferring all of that force through the grinder.
Every time the clutch slips, it wears away a little more of the plastic. A grinder that originally slipped because of one stubborn bean or stone can eventually slip under normal grinding loads. What could have been fixed with a thorough clean can then become a grinder replacement.
π§Ή How to Fix a Breville Grinder Making a BRRRR Noise
The first thing we recommend is a thorough grinder clean. Before working around the grinder, switch the machine off and unplug it from the power.
Step 1 β Remove the Coffee Beans and Hopper
Empty the beans from the hopper and remove the hopper from the machine. Vacuum out all loose beans and coffee debris you can access.
Step 2 β Remove the Upper Burr
Unlock and remove the upper burr. With it removed, thoroughly vacuum the grinder chamber again. Inspect carefully for stones, pieces of bean or anything else that should not be there.
Step 3 β Remove the Lower Burr
For a proper deep clean, go one step further and remove the lower burr. On applicable Breville grinder assemblies, the retaining nut is reverse threaded. Once removed, carefully lift the lower burr out.
Step 4 β Vacuum Underneath the Lower Burr
This is the area people often miss. Vacuum underneath and around the lower burr thoroughly to remove compacted coffee, fragments or foreign objects that could be stopping the grinder from rotating freely.
Step 5 β Reassemble the Grinder
Reinstall the lower burr and retaining hardware correctly, remembering the reverse thread where applicable. Reinstall the upper burr, lock it securely into position, then reinstall the hopper.
β Try a Darker Roast Coffee Bean
Once everything has been cleaned and reassembled, test the grinder again. For the first test, use a medium-dark or dark espresso roast rather than a very hard light roast. If it now operates normally, the original problem was likely excessive resistance from the beans or an obstruction in the burrs.
What If the Breville Grinder Still Makes the BRRRR Noise?
If you have completely cleaned the grinder, checked underneath the lower burr, reassembled everything correctly and tried suitable beans but the clutch keeps slipping, the damage may already have been done. Repeated slipping wears the plastic clutch components, and the grinder assembly will generally need to be replaced.
Continuing to use it is unlikely to improve the situation and will normally cause further wear. For other common coffee-machine faults, see our coffee machine troubleshooting guide.
π« The Most Important Thing: Stop When You Hear It
POP… POP… POP… BRRRRRR = STOP.
Don’t keep trying to grind. Empty the machine and thoroughly clean the grinder before using it again. Catching the problem early can be the difference between removing one stubborn bean or tiny stone and having to replace the entire grinder assembly.
