This one has a low level of difficulty to spot, and is definitely something to fix straight away.
The best telltale sign of pump failure is a delay in engagement. This means that when you press a shot button, or engage the water tap, the pump doesn’t start straight away. This however can be hard to spot, as if you prime your pump, or it primes itself by topping up the coffee boiler, it may run again with no delay, presenting as new.
- If you turn your machine on and the louder pump doesn’t engage, great. Let the machine get up to temperature, press a shot button, and if the pump doesn’t initiate straight away then it’s time for a new pump. It may skip some, or even ALL of the preinfusion and not kick in until the 2-10 second mark.
- If you turn your machine on and the louder pump does engage, you’re going to now need to wait. Let your machine get to temperature and leave it be, to turn off at standby (20m). Leave it for 30-60m, come back and then follow the above step
If the pump is not activating straight away and begins failing, this can be one of the reasons why you’re getting bad shots, less volume, weak coffee etc. More importantly it can cause the coffee boiler not to fill properly, and increase risk of boiler failure. Either purchase a replacement pump (we supply an upgraded quieter pump) or contact us to do the job for you.
